Villages of the urban fringe and within ecological control boundaries, constitute distinct and related counterparts to villages of the urban core. Different modes of development and strategies of protecting the natural environment, are explored through a focus on the Wutong Mountain Villages. Centered around water as resource and defining element, the research and its propositions by design explore concepts of integrating ecology and technology. Interactive models and dynamic 3D-projections incorporate documentary images and cutting-edge laser-scanning techniques. The displays include natural material samples, and design propositions combining infrastructural strategies and "spongecity" concepts towards balancing spatial utilizations with protecting ecological environments. Interviews with residents provide perspectives on the villages' conditions, towards dialogues with its social base, and proposals of balanced economic development. The project intends to bring the development of villages in natural environments with water resources into the public view. It will encourage greater attention to "urban fringe villages" within ecological control boundaries. The conceptualizations of this type of village may serve prototypical towards the development of the city's many villages as part of the urban core, by taking in consideration not only the economy and society, but further emphasizing harmonious coexistences of urban-dwellers, builtenvironments, and nature.
