The Urbanvillage Self-built House Study Group started the research of self-built houses in Chisha Village and Xiaozhou Village, Haizhu Dist, Guangzhou since September 2016. During the researching process, we found self-built house could be understood as a strategy of residents fighting against urbanism and capitalism. The residents earned their right to the city through building with minimum cost (which include efficiency and reasonable) to pursue maximum profit.

The research unfolds with following aspects:

1.The demands and living condition of self-built houses (clothes making company, clothes making studio and the residents inside)

2. The tectonic and cost of self-built houses (the cost, building process, and using condition of the self-built house)

3. The spatial game logic of self-built houses (a. height limit; b. cantilever limit; c. extension limit)

We only focus on reality solution rather than free creation of space and aesthetic. This would be a report from the frontline of urbanvillage which shows how the residents build their houses under the current circumstances.

The urban village self-built house study group was founded at August 2016, aiming at study urban and architectural space which showing the undefined space prototype and daily reality.

The group members includes: Zhiqiang Xu (Professor from Guangzhou University), Jieqi Chen (Urbanless architecture), Wenli (Individual architect and artist), and Yifan Zeng, Zhennan Li, Qiuying Lu, Xiaolan Lu (Students from Guangzhou University Architecture Collage).
