The production of Wellbeing

Space and Design STRATEGIES / Austria

A subjective research into the daily life in villages; to find out what habits we forgot and threw away, but actually should have kept, transformed and implemented in the future.

In The production of Wellbeing we researched how inhabitants of the villages adapted to their new urban surroundings by using performative urbanism, meaning our visions and wishes were as much part of our research practice as objective views. Space & Design STRATEGIES became part of the village and intervened with installations and actions mimicking daily life, to understand, record and display the current state of living in the urban villages.

The production of Wellbeing analyzes and illustrates the qualities of many aspects of daily life in the urban villages. How it's density influences the everyday routine, how people are able to adapt to the changing environment, … or fail to do so.

Our hypothesis: cities can learn from villages and villagers on how to produce Wellbeing and should thus doubt the globally promoted way of living and consuming.

For one month we lived in the exhibition space, shared it with the local inhabitants; we cooked together, we ate together, we debated together, we laughed together and maybe we even cried together.

Space and Design STRATEGIES is a department at the Art University in Linz, Austria. The department works at the intersection of urbanism, architecture and art. Its aim is to produce a research-based knowledge for a better world. The project for UABB is realized by two teams of professors and students working simultaneously in Shenzhen and Linz, led by Prof. Ton Matton.

Team Shenzhen - Antoine Turillon, Xian Zheng, Michael Dorfer, Lukas Kopf, Barbara Seyerl.

Team Linz – Larissa Meyer, Yue Hu and many more strategists.
