Dutch architect and urban design professor Stefan Al led a team of 20 researchers to document 15 Chinese urban villages. They interviewed villagers and visited and photographed their homes and

environment. The result, including drawings and stories of villagers, along with essays by a number of experts, has been published in the book Villages in the City: A Guide to South China's Informal Settlements (University of Hawaii Press; Hong Kong University Press, 2014) For his exhibition, the Chinese urban villages will be contrasted with the West Village in New York to draw unexpected parallels between these two sites. The exhibition contains drawings, sections, photos, and interviews with residents of fifteen villages within the Pearl River Delta and the West Village in New York.

The exhibit will display details of each village, including the typical size of a housing unit, population density, building area, dominant industry, average building height, and average street width. The villages are sampled in such a way to showcase a wide variety of villages scattered throughout South China's Pearl River Delta, in cities such as Shenzhen, Donguan, Guangzhou, Foshan and Zhuhai.

Stefan Al is an architect, urban designer, urban planner, and author, currently serving as associate professor of Urban Design at the University of Pennsylvania.
