Learning about Shenzhen history teaches the value of the diversity. In fact, there is not one Shenzhen.

There are the outer districts, there are the Hakka and indigenous Shenzhens, there are Old and New Shenzhen and there is a second generation of Shenzheners. There are northerners and southerners, and migrants from the west. Each of these Shenzheners represents possible lives that are realized in the life trajectories of particular individuals. However, there are few opportunities for Shenzheners to meet and discuss this history. Instead, we spend our lives in fixed routes-from our residences to our offices to our nightlife. The game, "Path Breaking" brings together our need for meaningful history and the social benefits of gaming. By representing Shenzhen history as a game,we allow players to imagine the multiplicity of interconnections that constitute the city's

ecology and to re-imagine the city's history.

In particular, we are interested in highlighting the diversity of life experiences that comprise Shenzhen. We believe that by bringing attention to the diversity of urban life experiences we can grow deeper roots in the city, nourish the soil of diverse neighborhoods, and cultivate the diversity that makes an ecology resilient.
