This exhibition explores the creativities and innovations of the self-built housing in villages-by-the-city.

Through demonstrating series of "non-mainstream" housing practices in Guangzhou villages-by-thecity, it challenges certain stereotypical public impressions of the current village housing practices, such as substandard living conditions, social exclusions, lacking of self-improving mechanisms, etc.

To better discuss the design and social implications, the exhibition organizes the housing cases into four thematic sections. Each section responds to a controversial issue on village self-built housing:congestion, social exclusion, gentrification, and residential segregation. According to different natures of the housing cases, it employs varied exhibition formats, such as interviews, architectural models, diagram analyses, photo essays, videos, etc. What it attempts to unfold is not only about the stories of villagers and migrant tenants, but also the creative housing typologies and management methods. It is about how people struggle in the rapidly changing social and urban environment. And how the choices of "alternative paths" are formulated during the struggles. In this sense, this exhibition is not about "the typical"or "generality". It is about "exceptionalism" and "diversity". Framing in this way, we do not mean to romanticize the reality by partializing the empirical facts. Rather, we acknowledge the criticism and dilemma of the current village housing practices, and attempt to go beyond them by presenting the existing alternatives.
