“Hubei 120 City Public Plan” Team / China

While the issue of village conservation in Hubei's urban renewal was largely ignored by the villagers themselves, this became a huge point of contention for the public. In July 2016, the Hubei 120 city plan, a product of a collective of designers, planners, academics and artists, came into public view. This manifesto has been the basis upon which individuals and organisations have increasingly participated in public conversations about Hubei. It has also led to grounded research and experiments within Hubei to the end of conceptualising and implementing better and more viable planning processes and outcomes. These variegated initiatives have clearly indicated the emergence of a new public appeal: third sector entities can and should be more thoroughly integrated into the urban village renewal process. As a process, 120 city plan boasts certain unique features/ outcomes (at least within the active periods of planning and implementation). These include: the unpredictability of events; the sudden arousal of sensations and motivations (with regards to the main aims of the manifesto); becoming increasingly sensitive to the issues within the urban renewal framework in Shenzhen; and becoming inspired to work towards publically co-produced knowledge generation and artistic production with ethical outcomes.
