Placing Shangsha is a pilot in developing a place-centric, community building methodology for Shenzhen and its villages. Utilising the ideation of an Open Identity for the village, Placing Shangsha seeks to make tangible the inherent values of the village; engage a wider range of actors and stakeholders; and speculate on the future of Shenzhen's diverse places. Shangsha Village (translated literally as 'Upon the Sand' Village) is located within the coastal plain of Futian's waterfront adjacent to Shenzhen Bay. As a pilot site, Shangsha shares common traits with Shenzhen's other inner-city urban villages, bearing witness to multiple eras of development and migration over the preceding 40 years. Within Placing Shangsha, Urbanus UPRD and SANS will present a map of Shangsha's social and cultural geography, its operational structures, and the rights and interests of its various stakeholders. This research is to inform a series of future-focused workshops and events during this year's Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture. Inviting a diverse array of academics, practitioners, leadership and community members, Placing Shangsha will be the kickstart to developing a comprehensive, multi-scalar model for urban vitality and cohesion, through the ideation of an Open Identity.

UPRD (URBANUS Program Research Design) is URBANUS’ platform for curation, exhibition, research and design. Established in 2010 within the existing comprehensive design practice of URBANUS, it is rooted in the existing experience and knowledge of URBANUS and follows URBANUS practice philosophy of “being an architectural designer with specific and consistent approach from the perspective of urbanism.” UPRD launched projects in urban design and urban research while searching for the multi-dimension and diversity of contemporary architectural practice.

SANS is an interdisciplinary studio engaging placemaking and revitalisation strategies for social, cultural and commercial contexts. We are a combination of thinkers and doers who seek to empower and activate people, communities and places.
