The Samsara of Building No.42 on Dirty Street, the architecture-themed quadruple painting, is a true record of the vicissitudes of a residential building on Dirty Street in Sanlitun, Beijing in the past decade.

Dirty Street is a nameless backstreet in Sanlitun. It is absolutely a wild street, with shops popping up and sprawling in all houses along both sides of the street, with underground subcultures spreading under the cover of the dirty, messy and shabby appearance of this district. It is the landmark and the soul of Sanlitun in the eyes of youngsters. Building No. 42 used to be a residential building on Dirty Street, and,as the crowds flooded into the Dirty Street, the building became "dirty" too.

The building has gone through a cycle of life and death in a decade's time. Its evolution demonstrates that the force of bottom-up urban development could be positive and beneficial, but it can also be violent and out of control. It is resilient and continuous on one hand and fragile and hopeless on the other. We are fortunate to be able to witness the complete cycle of rebirth of a city's corner in a short period of time. The Samsara of Building No.42 on Dirty Street is a reward to our encounter with the Dirty Street.

Founded by architect Li Han and designer Hu Yan in Beijing, Drawing Architecture Studio (DAS) is a creative platform integrating architecture, art, design, urban study, pop culture, and aiming to explore the new models for the creation of contemporary urban culture. (www.d-a-s.cn)
