Patching prolongs the life of objects. But also patches hide previous material layers. By this work we explore the concept of patchwork in the historic neighbourhoods located in the growing cities. On the micro-level, patchwork refers to a traditional treatment of the everyday environment when old things are renewed by fixing and patching them. In the historic neighbourhood of Snipiskes (Vilnius) the wooden houses of 19-20th century are still being patched by their owners using all kinds of materials (metal, plastic, wood, etc). In this way natural collages of multiple layers are being created. On the macro-level, urban patchwork refers to the redevelopment of the historic areas. By introducing new urban layers and by deconstructing previous urban fabric, the redevelopment brings contrast of architectural forms and materials. These days, unique and fragile contrast of three material levels can be found in Snipiskes neighbourhood. Wooden houses represent 19-20th century, the concrete blocks of flats that were built during the Soviet period, refer to the second part of 20th century, and while glass skyscrapers refer to 21st century. The images of urban contrasts, collages based on the authentic materials found in the neighbourhood, and the interactive collection of urban textures are presented.
