The "CeramicINformation" project is part of the research undertaken by the Robotic Fabrication Lab of the Faculty of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong. The continuous investigations seek to understand the potentials of new technologies to revive traditional material systems for architectural production today. In this specific iteration, the lab explored clay - a material that can be found almost everywhere in the world, and has a significant tradition in China. The project references the iconic glazed roof tiles of so many Chinese Temples, and highlights the new possibilities that lay before us, that have the capacity to change our cities. Based on the concept of a torqued surface, the "CeramicINformation" project utilizes robotic fabrication technology to produce a structure made entirely from 3d printed ceramic components. Each of the around 1000 glazed terracotta bricks is unique and different, permitting varying degrees of transparency, morphological shifts, and new experiences. In an environment with rapidly growing cities, robotic fabrication offers a trajectory for Architecture that has the potential to bring back specificity and diversity, while maintaining attributes such as efficiency and economic viability.
