In succession to the first Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture in 2005 that initiated the independent curator responsibility system, we successfully invited Yung Ho Chang and Qingyun Ma, two international renowned Chinese architects, and Ou Ning, a cross-field cultural practitioner, to act as chief curators for the previous three Biennales. They proposed respectively “City: Open Door”, “City Rebirth”, and “City Mobilization” as the exhibition themes to represent the strategies and achievement of studying urban architecture and life, especially by probing into the process of “City and Urbanization” here in Shenzhen. Success of the three previous Shenzhen Biennales embodies the open attitude, the spirit of innovation and the courage of constant exploration that all inherited from the history of establishing Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. These Biennales have initially built a communication platform for international art scenes in Shenzhen. Also in quest for the possibility of establishing an art exhibition system at international level, Biennale operates in accordance with international practices, and has inject a new variety into Shenzhen city as well as the contemporary art scenes, contributing beneficial attempts for forging a cultural brand for Shenzhen and improving cultural competitiveness of the city.
2011 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture will continue and further strengthen the fixed theme orientation “City and Urbanization”. And now, the 2011 curator position is widely open to applicants from all the relevant industries in all societies. Based on the previous operational experience, the qualification evaluating criteria of curator for this Biennale includes: 1. the achievement and influence in the field and the society; 2. professional innovation capacity; 3. both local and international exhibition curatorial experience; 4. abundant integrated resources attached, (e.g., capability to mobilize top professionals, well-established relationships with home and overseas medias, etc.).
