Shenzhen is a coastal city in South China known as the forefront of China’s economic reform. Formerly a small fishing village, it was officially nominated by China’ s reformist leader Deng Xiaoping as the first Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in 1980, thanks to its immediate adjacency to Hong Kong. The economy of Shenzhen has since rapidly boomed due to foreign investment since then and has proved to be the most successful Special Economic Zone in China.

Shenzhen is located in the Pearl River Delta. The municipality covers an area of 2,050 km² (790 sq. miles) including urban and rural areas, with a total population of 8,615,500, at the end of 2007, only 25 % of which had legal permanent residence. Shenzhen is a sub-tropical maritime region, with an average temperature of 22.4°C year-round (72°F). Formerly a hilly area, Shenzhen’s landscape has been replaced largely by flat lands for development. As an important portal for import and export, the port of Shenzhen is ranked as the world’s fourth-busiest port and the city’s output is comparable to a medium-sized province in China. In 2008, the GDP reached a record high of 780.65 billion Yuan, an increase of 12.1% over 2007. Its GDP per capita was 89,814 Yuan (US$13,153), making it one of the richest cities in China.

Plans to join forces and create a dual world-class metropolis with Hong Kong are underway. It was claimed that Shenzhen-Hong Kong could be the third largest metropolis in GDP terms by 2020, only behind New York City and Tokyo. The two cities are developing further cooperation on financial services, hi-tech and high-end research and development, transport, environmental matters and ecology.

Shenzhen can be reached by air, train, sea and road.
