Does this huge monster look like a bull? Right, this is the participating work from Rigo 23 – “Snow Bull Station”. Only the “skeleton” has been completed so far, while the “flesh” and “skin” are still under construction. Rigo 23 is a Portuguese American artist. His work addresses political concerns that intersect the local and the global while remaining steadfastly rooted in the environments of its creation and the relationships built within those communities. Before designing this work, he had been in Shenzhen for almost a month meeting and interviewing citizens.
3-2 Shade in the venue
“Barks” are being attached to “Medular Pavilion”, a participating work from Maurer United Architects. Once completed, the artificial woods can afford nearly one hundred visitors welcome shade, offering them a place to sit down, read and relax.
3-3 More than just a bicycle
Participating group Feld72 and curator Beatrice Galilee are examining the production of “PublicTrailer” in the exhibition service company. After refit, a bicycle can actually have much more functions. Therefore Feld72 refit three bicycles according to the imagination of both them and Shenzhen citizens. Can you guess what they are for?
3-4 Business opportunities in urban villages
“Gordon Wu” CityLocalTM, designed by the participating group aberrant architecture, is the exhibition venue for the business giant – Gordon Wu. It presents a series of franchised, small business opportunities for the inhabitants of Shenzhen’s villages in the city. By utilizing Shenzhen’s urban villages and the energy of the social conditions that they provide, these franchised businesses will provide the infrastructure needed to support the city’s growing home based mobile workforce.
3-5 Can air pollution and water shortage be solved?
The participating work “Urban Ecologies”, from Juan Du and an urban ecology research group in the University of Hong Kong, aims to confront conventional architectural design and city planning practices in association with sustainable architectural and urban design development. The urban ecology research group will exhibit two projects: Water Pavilion – Urban Cooler and Air Pavilion – Man-Powered Filter, addressing the severe urban problems of both Hong Kong and Beijing –air pollution and water shortage.
3-6 Voices from six societies
“Shenzhen: Social Measurement through Sound” is a participating project from Taiwan artist Lin Chi Wei in collaboration with six societies. There will be video records during the measurement. In this special device, audience will be surrounded by the recorded images and voices. They are watching measurement results and being measured at the same time. 3-7 An exhibition with waterscape
It may be not obvious so far, but these boards will be covered by a thin layer of water later. “Walking on Water” by Japanese artist Hideyuki Nakayama is probably one of the most poetic works in this year’s exhibition. A pool of water creates ripples and repercussions and ephemerally expands itself with the wet soles of those who step in it. You can also splash water like a child to create any kinds of waves, or do whatever you like.
3-8 A glance at the venue
On the Civic Square, the “grand crescent” which is used to separate exhibition areas has been painted green. Bicycle lovers in Shenzhen have spontaneously found its new function.
